SUPPORT THE MOVEMENT

STOP XENOPHOBIA CAMPAIGN

Xenophobia is the fear and hatred of foreigners or immigrants. It is a fear which has created an uncrossable divide between “us” and “them”, plaguing communities with acts of violence and hate. Xenophobia is not native to a single country, but is present all over the world, across cultures and languages. While xenophobic sentiments have been around in South Africa for some time, the mentalities largely turned into violence and targeted attacks in 1994, shortly after the apartheid regime ended. Though the majority of South Africa’s population identifies as African, xenophobic sentiments and deep racial divides have lingered in the post-apartheid era.  These mentalities have made their way into government and political decisions, as well as the economic sector, creating greater divides between people, and increasing discrimination towards immigrants.

There is no single answer to solve racial discrimination in South Africa; there are issues on multiple levels, both political and social, that contribute to the level of xenophobia in the country, and there must be a show of stronger political will, paired with a change in social consciousness, in order to set a path towards racial equality.
